Cells are….
A basic unit of life
Tissues
A group of similar cells carrying out the same function
Organs
A group of different tissues working together to carry out the same function
Organ system
A group of organs working together to carry out the same function
Organism
A plant or animal which is made up of cells, organs and organ systems
Nucleus
Contains the genetic material that controls what cells do
(Chromosomes or genes)
Cell membrane
Holds the cell together and controls what passes in and out of the cell
Cell wall
A rigid coat of cellulose that gives the plant cell its shape and support and strengthens the cell
Cytoplasm
A jelly like sub substance where chemical reactions take place
(eg. Breaking down of nutrients for energy)
Large vacuole
Stores food and waste products such as salts and sugars
Mitochondrion
Place where energy is released from nutrients by respiration
Chloroplast
Were photosynthesis occurs as it contains chlorophyll, a green pigment that traps the light energy from the Sun
Ribosomes
Make proteins
Muscle cells
Are long and flat and can expand and contract to help move bones
Root hair cells
In plant cells, have long narrow projections so that they can fit through soil particles to reach water
What do we use to dye a plant cell?
Iodine - highlights specific structures in cell
(Nucleus, cell wall)
What do you we used to die an animal cell?
Methylene blue - highlights specific structures in cell
(Nucleus, cell membrane)
What is a stem cell?
A single cell that can replicate itself or differentiate into many cell types
Where are stem cells found?
In the tissue of the embryos, the umbiblical cord, the placenta
Where are adult stem cells found?
In some tissues in the body
The cells in an embryo are known as
Stem cells
Where do cells come from?
Pre-existing cells
What are all living things made up of?
Cells
What are unicellular organisms?
Some plants and animals that are made up of only one cell
