Cells Flashcards
What is an organelle
The organs of cells
What is cytoplasm
The gel like fluid that surrounds the organelles
What is the nucleus
Stores and protects DNA, organizes materials needed for making proteins
What is a nuclear membrane
Surrounds the nucleus, allows certain substances to enter/leave the nucleus
What are ribosomes
Where proteins are made
What is endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
A network of membranes in the cytoplasm
What is rough ER
Has ribosomes on the surface, modifies and transports proteins
What is smooth ER
No ribosomes, makes lipids
What is the Golgi apparatus/body
Receives the proteins from the ER, stores and routes protein
What are vacuoles
Membrane bound sacs in the cytoplasm, stores nutrients and water in plants
What are lysosomes
Membrane bound sacs that contain digestive enzymes that can break down molecules, digest nutrients and nourish the cell, destroy harmful bacteria, recycle damaged organelles without harming the cell
What is the chloroplast
Where photosynthesis takes place in plants, they are green because of chlorophyll
What is the mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell, the site of cellular respiration
What is a cell membrane
Controls what comes in and out of the cell, made of phospholipids
What is the cytoskeleton
The skeleton of the cell, a network of fibers extending through the cytoplasm
