Cells Flashcards
Organelles
Small structures within cells that perform specific jobs.
Cell Membrane
Controls materials that move in and out of the cell. Known as the gatekeeper.Controls what enters and leaves
Ribosomes
Make proteins for the cell.
Cellulose
Firm material that makes up the cell wall. Abundant in celery.
Golgi Bodies
Receive proteins, package them, and distribute them. Known as the post office.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Tubes or passageways that carry materials from one part of the cell to the other. Known as the highway system.
Chloroplasts
Round, green structures found in plant cells. Photosynthesis takes place here.
Chlorophyll
Green pigment found in plants.
Nucleus
Controls all cell processes. Known as the control center or brain of the cell.
Cytoplasm
Gel like substance that holds organelles in place. Fluid that fills the cell.
Vacuole
Stores food, water, and waste for the cell.
Cell Wall
Surrounds the cell membrane. Gives the plant shape, support, and structure.
Mitochondria
Supplies the cell with energy. Uses sugar and oxygen to produce energy. Known as the powerhouse.
What 3 statements make up the cell theory?
All living tings are made of cells
The cell is the smallest unit of life
New cells come from pre- cells.
What 2 materials do cells need to survive?
Glucose and Oxygen
