Cell Types + Functions Flashcards
simple squamous epithelium
- Passage of materials by passive diffusion and filtration
- Secretes lubricating substances/molecules to make up the serosae membrane
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Needed to secrete and absorb
Simple columnar epithelium
- Absorption + secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other substances
- Ciliated simple columnar: propels mucus or reproductive cells by cilia to get it out of body
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
secrete mucus that’s propelled by cilia
Stratified squamous epithelium
- Functions to protect areas against abrasion
- Keratinized type (More keratin cell has = stronger/more protected cell is)
- Nonkeratinized type
Stratified cuboidal epithelium
Protection
Stratified columnar epithelium
Protect and secrete
Transitional epithelium
Permits distention of urinary organs when filled with urine
3 types of loose connective tissue
- areolar
- adipose
- reticular
3 types of dense CT
- dense regular CT
- dense irregular CT
- elastic CT
Areolar tissue
- Cells include fibroblasts, mast cells, leukocytes
- Wraps and cushions organs
- Holds and conveys tissue fluid
- Important for inflammation
Adipose tissue
- Provides reserve food fuel
- Insulates against heat loss
- Supports and protects organs
Reticular tissue
- Forms soft, internal skeleton (stroma)
- Supports other cell types
Dense irregular connective tissue
- Withstands tension from any direction
- Provides structural support
Dense regular connective tissue
- Attaches muscle to bone
- Attaches bone to bone
- Withstands great stress in one direction only
Elastic connective tissue
Allows recoil after stretching
3 types of cartilage
- hyaline
- elastic
- fibrocartilage
Hyaline cartilage
- Supports and reinforces
- Acts as cushion that resists repetitive stress
Elastic cartilage
Maintains shape of structure and allows great flexibility
Fibrocartilage
Tensile strength and ability to absorb compressive shock
bone tissue
- Supports and protects organs
- Provides levers and attachment site for muscles
- Stores calcium and other minerals
- Stores fat
- Marrow is site for blood cell formation
blood
Transports respiratory gasses, nutrients, and wastes
all classes of CT
- connective tissue proper
- cartilage
- bone
- blood
