Cell Transport and Osmosis Flashcards
1
Q
Define Passive transport
A
Passive transport describes the movement of molecules
across the plasma membrane WITHOUT the use of any
energy.
2
Q
What are the 3 types of Passive Transport
A
- (simple) Diffusion
- Facillitated Diffusion
- Osmosis
3
Q
What is (simple) Diffusion
A
The passive movement of small uncharged molecules that move across the plasma membrane, down the concerntration gradient
4
Q
What is facilitated diffusion
A
Facilitated diffusion is the passive movement of molecules down the concerntration gradient with the help of a membrane bound protien.
5
Q
What are the 2 methods of Facilitated diffusion? Give function of two methods.
A
- Protien channel: a membrane bound protien that selectively transports large polar molecules.
- Carrier Protien: A protien that changes shape to transport molecules through the membrane.
6
Q
Define Osmosis
A
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across a
selectively permeable membrane due to concentration
differences.
