Cell Theory and Types of Cells Flashcards
What is a prokaryotic cell?
Simple, unicellular organisms, no nucleus or membrane bound organelles. Genetic information in a loop called a plasmid. Has a cell wall, and moves using pili, flagella. Can form colonial organisms.
What are the two sub-groups within prokaryotes?
Bacteria and archaea. Archaea found in extreme environments.
What is a eukaryotic cell?
A cell with membrane bound nucleus and organelles. The organelles perform the biochemical processes of the cell. Can form unicellular, or multicellular organisms.
Who proposed the current cell theory, and what does it outline?
Schleiden and Schwann stated that cells are the smallest units of life, all living things are made of cells, and all cells come from pre-exisiting cells.
What are some features unique to plant cells?
Cell wall, chloroplasts, large permanent vacuole
What are some features unique to animal cells?
Centrioles, lysosomes
What do plant and animal cells have in common?
Membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, ER, ribosomes.
What do eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells have in common?
Genetic material, membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes
