Cell Structures Flashcards
Cell membrane
-this surface helps maintain the stability of the cell and regulates the passage of substances in and out of the cell.
-the membrane acts as a boundary, and the basic health of the cell is regulated by the membrane
-every cell has a membrane that separates it from extracellular material (substances outside the cell) from intracellular (inside the cell).
Nucleus
-the nucleus is the control center of the cell, and it dictates the function and overall structure of the cell.
-made up of nuclear membrane and chromatin, which contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is the basic genetic material in the cell.
-the central nucleolus is made up of ribonucleic acid (RNA), which is responsible for expressing our specific genetic makeup. RNA makes temporary copies of DNA.
Tissues
-cells do not work alone - different types of cells work together to form tissues
-when different types of cells work together, they form tissues; when different types of tissues work together, they form organs.
-there are 4 major tissue types of the human body
1. Epithelial
2. Connective
3. Muscle
4. Nervous tissue
Cytoplasm
The material or protoplasm within a living cell, excluding the nucleus
