Accessory Organs Flashcards
Hair
Made up of dead keratinocytes and is found throughout the surface of the body. Hair on the body serves two distinct purposes, protecting the body from UV radiation and insulating the body from losing internal heat.
Nails
Function as a protector of the fingers and toes. Nails form at the dorsal tips of the fingers and toes as keratin layers form from the base. As the new sales form, they push the old sales out distally. The visible portion of the nail is the nail plate which lies on the nail bed, where it connects to the finger. The nail route is found at the base of the finger and is protected by the cuticle.
Sebaceous glands
Found in the dermis where they secrete lubricants (sebum) which can help prevent dryness and cracking in the skin
Sudoriferous (sweat) glands
Located in the dermis and function to regulate body temperature
