Cell Structure - Part II Flashcards
What are Glyoxysomes?
Organelles found in Plant Seeds that convert fats into sugars.
What are the characteristics of the Peroxisomes
- It is bounded by a single membrane
- It is an oxidation location
- Detoxifies H2O2 with Catalayse
What is the Cytoskeleton?
A network of fibers that provide: -Support -Motility -Organization -Regulation for the cell.
What are the components of the Cytoskeleton?
- Microtubules
- Microfilaments
- Intermediate Filaments
What are Microtubules composed of?
Alpha, Beta, and Tubulin subunits that have a positive and negative end.
What is the Microtubule role in cell division?
It distributes the chromosomes between sister cells.
Describe the structure of the Flagella and how it moves.
There are nine sets of two Microtubules surrounding two Microtubules in the center. Motor proteins go up and down the sides causing the tail to whip back and forth.
What are the subunits of Microfilaments?
Actin
Describe the role(s) of Microfilaments.
It gives structure to the cell.
Microfilament role in movement?
Actin and Myacin aid in movement.
What composes Intermediate Filaments?
Fibrous protein like keratin.
What are the functions of Intermediate Filaments?
- Make up Nuclear Lamina
- Anchor Microfilaments to Microvilii
What is the main component of the Plant Cell Wall?
Mostly Cellulose.
What is the main component of the Cell Walls in fungi?
Chitin
How are adjacent cells in plants connected?
Plasmodesmata
