Cell Structure and Organisation Flashcards
What are the types of organisation within organisms?
Organelles
Cells
Tissues
Organs
Systems
Give examples of things in cell structures
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Cell membrane
Cell wall
Chloroplast
Ribosomes
Mitochondria
Vacuole
What is a nucleus?
Controls cell activity as a result of DNA it contains.
What is a cytoplasm?
Watery substance where chemical reactions occur
What is a cell membrane?
Controls entry and exit of substances to and from the cell
What is a cell wall?
Strengthens and protects the cell from bursting
What is a chloroplast?
Contains chlorophyll which absorbs sunlight in photosynthesis to make food for the plant
What do ribosomes do?
Makes proteins
What is a mitochondria?
Where respiration happens
What is a vacuole?
Contains cell sap
What are similarities in the structure of plant and animal cells?
Cell membrane
nucleus
ribosomes
cytoplasm
What are differences in the structure of plant and animal cells?
ONLY IN PLANTS
Cell wall
Chloroplasts
Vacuole
Mitochondria
Give examples of specialised cells
Sperm cells
Red blood cells
Root hair cell
How is a sperm cell adapted to carry out its specific function in the organism?
It has a tail and lots of mitochondria
How is a red blood cell adapted to carry out its specific function in the organism?
No nucleus, large surface area
