Cell structure Flashcards
Cell wall
It is fully permeable. Made of cellulose. Gives plant cells their shape and prevents them from bursting under osmotic pressure.
Cell membrane
Partially permeable. Controls what enters and what exits the wall
Mitochondria
The site of aerobic respiration in cells where glucose is broken down in carbon dioxide and water to release energy
Ribosomes
Makes proteins in the cell
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance which makes up most of the cells volume. Most of the chemical reaction take place in here
Chloroplasts
It is a green organelle which contains chlorophyll. Photosynthesis occurs here and light energy is converted into chemical energy.
Nucleus
It is the largest organelle. It contains DNA made im the form of chromosomes. This is the hereditary material. This organelle controls all of the chemical reaction of the cell.
Large permanent vacuole
It contains a cell sap which contains sugars, minerals and pigments. It controls how much much water enters the cell.
Chlorophyll
It’s the green pigment which is found inside chloroplasts. It traps light energy and converts it into a chemical energy in the form of glucose.
Organelle
Parts that make up a cell
Cell
Made up of organelle which combine together to make tissues
Tissue
A group of of cells with similar structure and function
Organ
Made of tissues that work together for a specific function
What are 3 difference between a plant cell and an animal cell
An plant cell has a cell wall, chloroplasts and a central vacuole and an animal cell does not
Organ system
Groups of organs that perform a particular function.
