cell specialisation Flashcards
example- muscle cells
function- to contract quickly
these cells are long (so they have space for them to contract) and contain lots of mitochondria to generate the energy needed for the contraction.
another example- root hair cells for absorbing minerals and water.
root hair cells are on the surface of plant root cells which grow into long ‘hairs’ that stick out into the soil.
this gives the plant a big surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil.
phloem- specialised for transporting substances
the phloem cells form tubes which transport substances such as food water around plants. to form tubes, the cells are long and joined end to end
xylem- specialised for transporting substances
are hollow in the centre which have very few subcellular structures so that stuff can flow through them. they transport things like food and water through the plant.
