cell cycle Flashcards
what happens to body cells in multicellular organisms?
they divide to produce new cells as part as a series of stages called the cell cycle
what is the cell cycle called?
mitosis
why does mitosis happen?
to grow or replace cells that have been damaged
what does the end of the end of the cell cycle produce?
two identical cells to the original cell with the sae number of chromosomes.
what is the first stage of the cell cycle?
before it divides the cell has to grow and increase the amount of subcellular structures such as mitochondria and ribosomes.
what is the second stage?
it then duplicates its DNA (so there’s more then one copy for each new cell) the DNA is copied and forms X-shaped chromosomes. each arm of the chromosomes is an exact duplicate of the other.
