cell differentiation + specialisation Flashcards
when cells change what do they develop?
different sub-cellular structures and turns into different types of cells letting them to carry out specific jobs
when does most differentiation happen?
as the organism develops
what happens in animal cells?
the ability to differentiate is lost at an early stage after they become specialised
in plant cells?
plant cells never have the chance to loose the ability to differentiate
what happens in mature animals?
in mature animals the cells are mainly used for repairing and replacing cells (skin and blood cells)
one example of a specialised cell (sperm cell)
the sperm cell needs to swim to the females egg so it has a long tail and a streamlined head. there is lots of mitochondria to provide energy needed and carries enzymes to digest through the cell membrane
another example (nerve cell)
the function- to carry electrical signals from one part of the body to the other. the cells are long for distance, and have branch connections at the end to connect to other nerve cells to create a network throughout the body
