binary fission Flashcards
what is binary fission?
binary fission is where the cell splits into two
step one?
the circular DNA and plasmids replicate
step two?
the cell gets bigger and the circular DNA strands move to opposite ‘poles’ (ends) of the cell
step three?
the cytoplasm divides and the two daughter cells and produced, each daughter cell has one copy of the circular DNA but can have a variable number of copies of the plasmids
can bacteria divide? and what will they need
bacteria can divide very quickly when given the right conditions- warm environment and lots of nutrients
how can you calculate the number of bacteria in a population?
the mean division time is the average amount of time it takes for one cell to divide into two.
