Cell Physiology Flashcards
Cytoplasm
contains organelles and fluid surrounding them (cytosol)
Composition of the cell membrane
double layer of amphipathic phospholipids and embedded proteins
Are there chemical bonds linking the phospholipid bilayer?
no, this allows free movement
The cells bind to the ECM through:
- Desmosomes and cadherins (small space between the cells)
- Tight Junctions (No space between)
- Gap junctions (channels linking the cytosol of 2 cells)
Nucleus function
stores genetic info
Nuclear envelope function
protects the nucleus and has pores that allow communication with the cytoplasm
Nucleolus
densely packed filamentous region that contains DNA regions which form the RNA in ribosomes
Ribosome function
RNA is translated into proteins
- two subunits combine during protein synthesis
Rough endoplasmic retuculum function
Packing the proteins that will be secreted from the ribosomes bound to its surface
Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum function
- Lipids are synthesized here.
- It also stores and releases calcium
Mitochondria function
powerhouse of the cell
Where did the mitochondria come from?
endosymbiotic hypothesis (mitochondria was a different organism. has own cellular membrane and DNA)
Endosome function
direct vesicular traffic in cells
Lysosome function
Break down bascteria, debris and other organelles
Peroxisome function
Removes Oxygen from organic molecules such as lipids, alcohol, and other toxic subtances.
