Cell Parts Flashcards
What is the function of the Nucleus?
Controls most cell function and contains DNA. The brain of the cell
What is the function of the nuclear envelope?
Protects the nucleolus
What is the function of the nuclear pore?
Allows material (RNA, proteins, other molecules) in and out of the nucleus
What is the function of chromatin?
Contains genetic information and can be rearranged into chromosomes if the cell divides
What is the function of the nucleolus?
To begin the assembly of ribosomes
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Newly made proteins get inserted into it to the synthesized and chemically modified
What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
To contain enzymes that preform specific tasks
What is the function of ribosomes?
To assemble proteins which will be redirected to where they are needed
What is the function of chloroplasts?
To convert sunlight into energy in plant cells
What is the function of mitochondrion?
To convert chemical energy from food into other uses for the cell
What is the function of the vacuole?
The storage system of the cell. The pressure of a vacuole makes it possible for plant cells to support leaves and flowers
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus?
The proteins produced by the rough ER get modified, sorted, packed by the Golgi apparatus
What is the function of the cytoskeleton?
To help the cell maintain it’s shape and help with movement of the cell
What is the function of the cell wall?
Provides support and protection for the cell. Allows water, CO2 and other specific substances to pass easily. Only in plant cells
What is the function of the lysosome?
To break down junk or clutter for the cell
