Cell Organelles Flashcards
2 kinds of cells
Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes
What does the prefix ‘pro’ mean?
before/no (meaning no nucleus)
Describe prokaryotes
before/no nucleus, free-floating DNA, no organelles
What is the only example of a prokaryotic cell?
Bacteria
What does the prefix “eu” mean?
True (meaning true nucleus)
Describe eukaryotes
true nucleus, DNA is contained in the nucleus, has organelles
What is cytoplasm?
clear, living, gooey stuff that holds together organelles
What is cytosol?
Cytoplasm with out organelles
What is the nucleus?
the control center of the cell
What are the three purposes of lysosomes?
Waste, Suicide sacs, and Animal development
Describe the “waste” purpose of lysosomes?
-garbage disposal of cell
-contains digestive enzymes that break down wastes
Describe the “Suicide sac” function of lysosomes?
If a cell membrane or DNA is damaged, the nucleus messages the lysosomes to burst dissolving/digesting/destroying the cell, ( this process is called Apoptosis )
3 kinds of gooey stuff in cells
cytoplasm- gooey stuff WITH organelles
cytosol- gooey stuff WITHOUT organelles
nucleoplasm- gooey stuff inside the nucleus
Around what two organelles are there double membranes?
nucleus and the mitochondria
What does the nucleus do?
it directs cell processes by copying genes and sending RNA instructions out to the rest of the cell
