cell membrane structure Flashcards
phospholipids
the main molecule of which membranes are composed of. They have a phosphate head and two fatty acid tails
phospholipid bilayer
2 layers of phospholipid that make up the cell membrane
fluid mosaic model
fluid means the phospholipid can move around freely without breaking
mosaic means the proteins are scattered amongst the phospholipids
phosphate head
hydrophilic (water loving)
fatty acid tails
hydrophobic (water-loving)
integral proteins
a permanent part of the membrane
transmembrane protein
integral proteins that span the entire bilayer
peripheral proteins
temporarily attached to the plasma membrane
protein function
transport - control what enters and exits cell
catalysis - speeds up chemical reactions
communication - receive signals and recognise cell and molecules
adhesion - stick to other cells
carbohydrates
in chains and extend outside the cell, rooted in membrane to lipid or protein
aids with cell to cell communication
cholesterol
a lipid steroid embedded in between the fatty acid tails of the phospholipid bilayer
regulates the fluidity of the membrane
