Cell membrane Flashcards
What is the name of the model that include phospholipid bilayer and proteins?
The fluid mosaic model
The three properties of a cell membrane
- Flexible
- Fluid
- Selectively permeable
The three chemical structures of the cell membrane
- Lipids
- Proteins
- Carbohydrates
What form are the lipids in the cell membrane?
- Phospholipids
- Cholesterol
What form are the carbohydrates in the cell membrane?
- Glycoproteins
- Glycolipids
What part of the phospholipid is hydrophilic/hydrophobic?
The head of the phospholipid is hydrophilic and the tail of the phospholipid is hydrophobic
What molecules cannot pass easily through the membrane?
ionic and polar molecules
What molecules can pass easily through the membrane
lipid-soluble molecules
Why do small organism not need gaseous exchange or transport system?
They don’t need these as they can obtain and remove all waste they need through diffusion.
Due to the short diffusion distance, SA/V ratio is high and metabolic demands are low.
What do SA/V ratio stand for?
Surface Area to Volume ratio
Why do large organism need gaseous exchange and transport systems?
Large organism have low SA/V ratio, so diffusion is not adequate to supply needs and remove waste because of the large diffusion distance.
Factors that effect the rate of diffusion
- Area of diffusion
- Difference in concentration
- Thickness of diffusion surface
