Cell Division/Genetics Flashcards
1
Q
Binary Fission
A
- A prokaryote copies its DNA
- It elongates and divdes in 2 perfect halves
2
Q
What are the 3 components to eukaryotic cell division
A
- chromosome
- chromatin
- naked dna
3
Q
How does DNA have to be?
A
- Has to be spread out enough so we can get to all of the information
- Wouldn’t be possible if wrapped in chromosomes but we do it anyway b/c it helps to drag DNA to sides of the cell and divide
4
Q
Phases of Cell Divison
A
G1, G0, G2, Mitosis
5
Q
Purpose of Mitosis
A
Makes identical cells (clones
- growth
- repair
- asexual reproduction
6
Q
Purpose of Meiosis
A
Makes unique sex cells (gamete)
-sexual reproduction
7
Q
How many chromosomes are in sex cells?
A
23 (gamete, haploid cell)
8
Q
2n
A
46 chromosomes
9
Q
somatic
A
2n (pairs bc of parents)
10
Q
How do you know if its n or 2n?
A
If they are paired with a partner of similar size and shape it is 2n and a copied cell
11
Q
Where are genes grouped into chromosomes?
A
The nucleus
12
Q
How are chromosomes made?
A
chromatin coils up
