Cell Division Flashcards
Why do animals need constant new cells?
-Growth
-Repair
-Development
What are the 3 main stages of the “Cell Cycle”
-Growth
-DNA replication + mitosis
-Division (cytokinesis)
Cell cycle - Growth
-cell grows in size
-increases the number of sub-cellular structures
it contains e.g. mitochondria and ribosomes
What happens to the DNA strings as it prepares for division
-DNA condenses into chromosomes
Why cant some species produce fertile offsprings?
They have a different amount of chromosome pairs
Cell cycle - DNA replication + Mitosis
-Duplicate each chromosomes which are
attached together
-They all line up at the centre of the cell
-cell fibres pulls each arm of the same
chromosome to the poles breaking the
chromosome into halves
-
Cell cycle - Division (cytokinesis)
-Cell membrane and cytoplasm pulls apart
forming 2 identical daughter cells
- cells have the same DNA
