Cell Division Flashcards
What type of cell division is mitosis responsible for?
Growth and repair
What type of cell division is meiosis responsible for?
Reproduction
What do both mitosis and meiosis involve?
Both involve division of the nucleus and
division of the cytoplasm
When do the chromosomes become visible?
By the end of prophase
Each half of a double stranded chromosome
is called a…
Chromatid
What happens during interphase?
Preparatory stage
•Nucleus is present
•Chromosomes not visible - each one is being copied
Organelles are being formed to support two
new cells
What happens during prophase?
Spindle fibres start to form
The nuclear membrane & nucleolus start to disappear
Chromosomes appear threadlike and then condense to form double stranded chromosomes
What happens during metaphase?
•The chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell
•The centromeres attach to the spindle
What happens during anaphase?
•Centromeres split
•One half of each double stranded chromosome moves to one end of the cell with the centromeres leading
•By late anaphase the chromosomes reach the poles of the cell
•The cytoplasm starts to divide
What happens during telophase?
Cytoplasm finishes dividing
•Chromosomes fade from view
•The nuclear membrane and nucleoli form
•The spindle disappears
•A second centriole forms in each cell
•“opposite to prophase”
•There are now two cells identical to the parent cell
What are the differences between mitosis and meiosis?
MITOSIS results in two cells that are genetically identical to original parent cell
MEIOSIS results in a genetically different cell to the parent cell.
How many times does the nucleus and cytoplasm divide during meiosis?
Twice
What happens during the first stage of meiotic division?
During the first meiotic division the pairs of chromosomes become single chromosomes
What happens during the second stage of meiotic division?
During the second meiotic division the double - stranded chromosomes become single – stranded chromosomes
How many cells are produced at the end of meiotic division?
Four
