Cell Cycle and Meiosis Flashcards
What is the order of interphase?
G1, S, G2, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, Cytokinesis
What is the purpose of mitosis?
For growth and to replace worn out cells.
Why does an organism need to produce more cells?
Without cell division, living things wouldn’t exist. If they kept dividing without producing more, there would not be enough cells.
How is cancer and the cell cycle linked?
Cancer occurs when cells cannot control mitosis. Cancer cells don’t have the mechanisms to tell them to stop producing, do they reproduce over and over and create tumors.
Specialized cell 1 and its function
Red Blood Cells- Cardio vascular system, carry oxygen
Specialized cell 2 and its function
B-cells-Immune System- Creates antibodies to neutralize pathogens
Specialized cell 3 and its function
Sperm Cells- Reproductive system- Swim to the egg for reproduction
Specialized cell 4 and its function
Egg Cells- Reproductive system- Fuse with sperm to start sexual reproduction
What happens in Interphase?
The cell grows, replicates its chromosomes, and prepares for cell division
What happens in Prophase?
Chromosomes coil up and become visible, Nuclear envelope dissolves, spindle forms
What happens in Metaphase?
Chromosomes move to the center and line up along the equator
What happens in Anaphase?
The sister chromatids separate from each other and are pulled towards opposite ends of the cell
What happens in Telophase?
Nuclear envelope forms at each pole. Chromosomes uncoil, cytokinesis begins.
What is a Diploid?
2 copies of each chromosome, found in somatic cells, 2n
What is a Haploid?
1 copy of each chromosome, Found in sex cells, 1n
