Cell Cycle Flashcards
Cell Cycle
The life cycle of a cell. The series of growth and development steps, involving the birth of the mother cell and the division into two daughter cells.
Two phases of the cell cycle
Interphase, mitotic phase
Interphase
The cell grows and makes a copy of its DNA
Mitotic Phase
The cell separates its DNA into two sets and divides its cytoplasm to make two new cells
Interphase is split into 3 stages
G1, S, G2
G1 Phase
Cell grows physically larger, copies organelles, makes molecular building blocks needed in later steps
S Phase
Cell synthesizes complete copy of the DNA in its nucleus. Duplicates centrosome (microtubule-organizing structure). Centrosomes help separate DNA during Mitotic phase
G2
Cell grows more, makes proteins and organelles, begins to organize contents in preparation of mitosis
Mitotic Phase Involves 2 Stages
Mitosis, Cytokinesis
Mitosis
Cell division involving a mother cell splitting into two daughter cell. DNA is replicated, and is pulled apart by mitotic spindle.
4 Stages of Mitosis
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasm splits into two cells
How do animal and plant cells divide the cytoplasm?
- Animal cells divide by a cleavage furrow: the cell pinches inwards
- Plant cells divides by the formation of a cell plate, which eventually becomes the cell wall of two individual cells
