Active Transport Flashcards
Active Transport:
Uses carrier proteins move substances across the membrane
- Materials move up concentration gradient: from low to high solution concentrations
- Concentration becomes unbalanced on either side of the membrane
- Energy (ATP) is needed by the cell to move materials
Bulk Transport:
When extremely large substances need to be moved across the cell membrane
- Endocytosis and exocytosis
Endocytosis:
Bulk transport of materials INTO the cell
- When materials enter the cell without crossing the membrane
- Membrane folds around the particles and forms new vacuole in cell
- Can be split into phagocytosis and pinocytosis
Phagocytosis
The bulk transport of solid materials into the cell
Pinocytosis
The bulk transport of materials that are in a solution
Exocytosis
Vesicle fuse to the cell membrane to release contents (waste/cell products), reverse of endocytosis
