Cell Communication Flashcards
Types of cell communication
Functional classification of junctions
* Occluding junctions
* Anchoring junctions
* Communicating junctions
Occluding junctions
Tight junctions -*Main role is to seal cells together to prevent molecules from leaking either to another cell or across a boundary
Anchoring junctions
Main role is to mechanically attach cells (and their cytoskeletons) to adjacent cells or to theextracellular matrix.
Types of anchoring junctions
Actin filament and Intermediated filament
Types of Actin filament anchoring junctions
- Cell to cell (adherens junction)
2.cell matrix junction (focal adhesions)
Types of intermediate filament anchoring junctions
1.Cell to cell( desmosomes)
2. Cell matrix (hemidesmosomes)
Communicating junctions
*Main role is to control the passage of signals (chemical or electrical) from one cell to the other.
*Most cells are linked to their neighbours via gap junctions
*Good examples are cardiac and smooth muscle cells
Types of communicating junctions
- Gap Junctions
- Chemical Synapes
