cell biology and genetics 1 - neil Flashcards
what is the criteria of living organsisms
organised
metrabolsim
growth
react to stimuli
reproduction
evolve
what are the 3 domains of life
archea
eubacteria
eukayotes
what are archea
microbes
describe archea
Live in extreme environments
also live in unordinary temperatures and salinities
what does archea not require?
sunlight for photosyntehsis nor oxygen
what deoes archea absorb and give off
absorb c02 and nitrogen and give off methane gas as a waste product
How is life organised
Seven levels or Taxa (taxonomic arrangements)
what are the 7 classifications of life
domain
kingdom
phylum
class
order
family
genus
species
Similarities between Archea & Eubacteria
Absence of nucleus (Nucleoid).
Absence of membrane-bound organelles.
Cell wall exists as Peptidoglycans.
Similarities between Archea & Eukaryotes
Multiple RNA polymerases.
ATPases present.
Presence of Histones.
Eubacteria?
“True bacteria”, are microscopic prokaryotic cells
The most important characteristics (out of the 6 previously mentioned criteria) for the cell to prolong its existence is;
Grow
Reproduce (Sexually or Asexually)
Q. What is the Cell Cycle & what does it do?
The stages that cells have to progress through (in the mechanism of asexual reproduction) which ultimately leads to cellular division
The cell cycle is essentially made up of two Major phases;
Mitosis
Interphase
what happens in the g1 stage
growth and preparation for DNA replication.
Cells increase in size, produce RNA, and synthesize proteins.
