Cell Bio Flashcards
what is the cell theory
cells are a basic unit of structure and function in life, all living things are made of cells, cells come from pre-existing cells
what are the two cell types
prokaryotic, eukaryotic
What three cell structures do only plants have
central vacuole, chloroplast, cell wall
What 5 things do all cells have in common?
cell membrane, ribosomes, cytoplasm, DNA, plasma membrane
What does semi-permeable mean?
allows certain substances to pass through, solvent but not certain solutes
What is the tail end of the phospholipids?
non-polar
what is the function of the phospholipids?
long term energy
what is the function of cholestrol?
help with fluidity
what is the function of proteins?
structure, cell wall, muscle
how do molecules move during passive transport?
from high concentrations to low
how do molecules move during active Transport?
molecules move from low concentrations to high
What 3 transports are passive transport?
diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis
does passive transport require energy?
no
what material does diffusion move through?
phospholipids
what material does facilitated diffusion move through?
membrane spanning protein
what material does osmosis move through?
water
what 2 transports are active transports?
active Transport, cytosis
does active Transport require energy?
yes
what material does active Transport move through?
membrane spanning proteins
what material does cytosis move through?
membrane form vacuole
if a cell is hypotonic then it will get (larger/smaller)
larger
if a cell is hypertonic it will get (larger/smaller)
smaller
what are organelles?
cellular structure that has one or more specific hobs to perform in a cell
why do cells have difference in their structures?
they accumulate different sets of RNA and protein molecules
what characteristics describe a prokaryotic cell?
doesn’t have a membrane surrounding its DNA, free-floating
what characteristics describe a eukaryotic cell?
nucleus is enclosed in nuclear membrane (nucleolus)
what 2 cells are only in animal cells?
nucelus, membrane bound organelles
