Cell adaptaion Flashcards
What are the 5 types of cell adaptive changes?
Atrophy
Hypertrophy
Hyperplasia
Metaplasia
Dysplasia
What is atrophy?
Decrease in size / amount of a cell
*** AFTER reaching normal growth
What are the properties of atrophy?
Cells regress into smaller cell size and survive
Decreased function
What does involution mean?
Atrophy due to physiologic process
e.g. Thymus gets smaller with age
What is hypertrophy?
Skeletal & Cardiac muscle that increased in size
*** Without cellular proliferation
What is hyperplasia?
Increase in number of cells
*** Reversible
What is metaplasia?
Differentiated cell type is replaced by another differentiated cell type
*** Reversible
What is dysplasia?
Disordered growth of cells
*** Irreversible (Only cell adaptive mechanism that is irreversible)
