Cell Flashcards
What is a cell
The basic unit of a body structure.
What does a cell need to survive and thrive
Food, water, and oxygen.
What happens when there are a group of cells with similar functions?
They form tissues.
What do tissues with similar functions do?
Form organs
What is a group of organs that work together to preform special functions?
A system.
What are the functions of the cell
Take in food and oxygen, produce heat and energy, move and adapt to environment, eliminate waste, etc.
Cell membrane
Outer protective cell covering. Allows certain substances to enter and leave cell and prevent others.
Cytoplasm
Semi fluid in cell. Contains water proteins lipids carbohydrates minerals and salts. Chemical reactions take place here. Holds organelles.
Nucleus
Mass in cytoplasm l controls cell activities, helps in mitosis.
Nucleolus
1 or 2 small round bodies in nucleus. Important in cell reproduction. Ribosomes manufactured in it.
Chromatin
Located in nucleus, made of DNA and proteins.
Centrosome
In cytoplasm near nucleus. Contains two centrioles.
Mitochondria
Located throughout cytoplasm. Breaks down carbs, proteins, fat, to produce atp (energy)
Golgi apparatus
Membrane layer in in cytoplasm. It produces stores packages secretions to be secreted from cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Tubular structures in cytoplasm. Rough er contains ribosomes (protein synthesis) Smooth er synthesizes cholesterol fat, and detoxifies drugs.
