Anatomy: Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Framework, protection, levers (attach to muscles to provide movement), production of blood cells, storage (calcium, phosphorus, and fats)
Cranium
Skull, surrounds and protects the brain
Face
Front of head, protects brain mouth and nose. Helps eating and breathing with tissues.
Clavicle
Collar bone, allows shoulder movement, connects axial and appendicular skeleton.
Scapula
Shoulder blade, allows for movement, point of attachment for muscles.
Sternum
Breastbone, protects heart and lungs, thoracic cavity organs.
Ribs
Bones in chest, protect thoracic cavity organs
Humerus
Upper arm bone, provides support to shoulder and allows for movement
Vertebrae
26 small bones that make up backbone. Helps you stand.
Coxal bone
Hop bone, connects to thighs and protects reproductive organs
Ulna
Inner, larger bone of forearm. Pinky finger side, helps move arm wrist and hand.
Radius
Lateral bone of forearm. Allows arm to flex, bend, extend, at elbow and wrist.
Carpal bones
Wrist, allows it to move and rotate
Metacarpal bones
On hand, palm. Forms arch in hands that holds the muscles nerves and tendons.
Phalanges
Fingers and toes. Helps grip and balance. Holding objects, posture.
Femur
Thigh bone. Holds body weight when standing. Connects muscles of hips and knees to the body.
Patella
Kneecap. Helps move leg and protect knee joint
Tibia
Medial, larger bone of lower leg that holds body weight and helps with balance.
Fibula.
Calf bone. Provides stability to ankle joint and connects with tibia.
Tarsal bones
Ankle. Carries and transfers weight. Helps with balance.
Metatarsals.
Foot bones that form an arch to help weight bearing and walking,.
