Q

For which of the reasons would the contractor consider using the alternate, fly ash, in lieu of portland cement?

A
  1. Lower embodied energy-
Because fly ash is a byproduct of burning pulverized coal, it requires less energy to produce than portland cement. It also requires less water than portland cement.
  2. Better workability-
Fly ash improves the segregation of the concrete, thereby making it easier to pump. These added benefits would lead to a quicker slab pour.
