Bibliology
What are the four areas of Bibliology?
Origin and Revelation, Inspiration, Canonicity, Transmission and Translation
Derived from the Greek
word αποκαλυπσις (apokalupsis), which means “disclosure” or “unveiling.” Therefore, it signifies God unveiling (revealing) himself to mankind.
Revelation
God’s communication of
himself to all persons at all times in all places
General Revelation
God’s particular
communications and manifestations to
particular persons at particular times,
available now only by consultation of the
Bible
Special Revelation
The Holy Spirit’s directing over the writers of the Bible so that while writing according to their own styles and personalities, the result was God’s Word written – authoritative, trustworthy, and free from error in the original autographs
Inspiration
The Holy Spirit
superintended the writers
Divine Element
The human
authors wrote according to their individual
styles and personalities
Human Element
The result of the divine human authorship is the recording of God’s Word, without error
Word of God Element
Inspiration pertains only to the original autographs
Original Element
The doctrine of the creation of the Bible
Inspiration
Describes results of the creation of the bible
Inerrancy and Authority
Concerns the recognition of the creation of the bible
Canonization
The presently accepted collection of inspired writings, which make up the Bible
Canon
A set of books that do not
meet the criteria of the Hebrew canon but is listed in the Greek Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures) but absent in the Latin Vulgate. The Roman Catholic Church officially endorsed most of these books at the Council of Trent in 1546 while the Protestants rejected them.
