implies physical embodiment of death, metaphorically implying that his fate is sealed
ominous and frightening - gives impression all hope is lost if Scrooge doesn’t change his ways. makes him more receptive to change
I fear you more than any spectre I’ve ever seen

desperation to eradicate his name from the gravestone emphasises fear and urgency to prevent this outcome
has now realised the fickleness of his materialism and miserly ways, as in death none of that matters
this case of this unhappy man is my own. My life tends this way now

I will honour christmas in my heart, and try to keep it the whole year round

if there is any person in this town, who feels emotion caused by this man’s death
anxiously wants to know if there is someone who has some emotions
- they show happiness and relief
understand futility of only caring about money if no one cares about you in death
