A solitary child, neglected by his friends
unfeeling scrooge starts sobbing at this, his shell around him beginning to soft
mirrors ‘ solitary as an oyster’
demonstrates pain still in him from memories of childhood isolation
feelings carried into adulthood- invokes some sympathy
a lonely boy was sat reading near a feeble fire
sympathy for young Scrooge where his loneliness was not by choice
mirrors Scrooge of today- easier to choose isolation than be forced into it
shows he isn’t heartless
father is so much kinder than he used to be
strained relationship with father is contributing to how he turned out
- rejected and isolated. Has no family and focuses on wealth
contrasts Bob’s family
from the crown of its head there sprung a bright clear jet of light
light has connotations of purity, goodness and truth(traits linked to innocence of childhood)
Scrooge cannot bear it, implying he recognises and dislikes the difference between his childhood and adult life
a positive light appeared to issue from his calves
symbolises all the good that a person with money and power can spread
reminder of Scrooge’s forgotten youth, representing time of innocence before greed
living embodiment of the true meaning of christmas
the happiness he gives is as great as if it cost a fortune
speaking like his past self- realises he has not followed Fezziwig’s example
money wasn’t the source of employee’s fulfilment, generosity of manner was
shaking hands individually as he or she went out
benevolent, exuberant and thoughtful
sees past people’s social class and rather as fellow humans whereas scrooge believes himself superior to his employees and the poor
