CC Stave 3 Flashcards
A jolly giant… who bore a glowing torch
torch shows his goodness
- light has connotations of purity and hope
exuberant, symbol of christmas cheer and generosity
antique scabbard; but no sword was in it and the ancient sheath was eaten up with rust
war is old and something of the past
symbolises peace and implies that people should move past violence on a day like christmas
he was not the dogged Scrooge he had been
“I went forth last night… and learnt a lesson which is working now”
Dickens indicates change has started, his reaction to the spirit contrasts his earlier reaction
starting to show remorse and guilt
‘let me profit by it’
Tell me tiny Tim will live
Scrooge’s heart is stirred by compassion by the plight of Tiny Tim who is still cheerful eventhough he’s disabled
begins to see poor and sick as real humans with value and dignity, not an abstract concept that suck money
- not assigns a face to the poor
his concern marks a change in his consciousness
there was never such a goose
all Cratchit’s are very happy and excited by meagre meal
Scrooge realises Cratchits don’t get enough to eat because he chooses to exploit and underpay Bob
If he be like to die, he had better do it and decrease the surplus population
ghost points out Scrooge’s contradiction with earlier contention that poor and sick should be gotten rid of
scrooge now associates a real human(tiny Tim) to the lower classes
- dawns on him they could really die
Scrooge hung his head to hear his own words quoted by the spirit
begins to see the error of his ways
feels ashamed and we see him beginning to wish he could change
Dickens is showing how unpleasant upper-class’ behaviour truly is
I’ll give you Mr Scrooge, founder of the feast
Cratchit is grateful to his boss even when Scrooge is too miserly to offer him a good wage
the celebration the Cratchit’s have tells Scrooge that family is more important than money
I am sorry for him; I couldn’t be angry with him if I tried. Who suffers by his ill whims? Himself, always
short sentences - Fred is tired of Scrooge’s behaviour(exasperated)
Dickens is showing how he is tired of upper class capitalist behaviour
Fred pities and loyally defends his uncle which proves Fred to be kind, caring and only person who cares about Scrooge
the boy is Ignorance, the girl is Want… beware them both
blatant allegorical figures
represent conditions of poor(wretched, hungry and unable to pull themselves out of misery)
Scrooge realises cruelty of his opinions after being forced to look upon society’s most vulnerable after not giving them much thought before apart from general contempt
Shows the failings of society that fails to meet basic needs of children
most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is doom
Ignorance is more dangerous
- willingness to overlook the destitute prolongs social problem of poverty
- poor and unable to escape due to lack of education
requires more vigilance to overcome because it requires lasting change of heart from the privileges(want can be relieved temporarily)
by forcing the needy into workhouses and prisons, cycle of poverty only perpetuates itself
