CBC Flashcards
Common reasons for Leukocytosis
A.L.
Acute Infection (BFP, bacterial fungal or parasitic)
Leukemia (Chronic prob)
Common reasons for Leukopenia
Infection (usually viral)
Bone marrow depression from meds, chemo, radiation, or disease
(aplastic anemia and certain stages and types of leukemia)
Neutrophilia
infections, usually bacterial (fungal and parasitic also possible)
chronic myeloid leukemia
Neutropenia
viral infections
aplastic anemia
“band neutrophils” are?
band-shaped nucleus-means upregulated output of neutrophils so there is a current increase in immature cells.
“segmented neutrophils”
segmented-shaped nucleus of neutrophils. mature neutrophils.
Eosinophilia
Allergies and asthma
Parasitic disease
Several chronic diseases, including hematologic malignancies
Basophila
Chronic inflammation
hematologic malignancies
Allergies
Function of Monocytes
innate/acquired immunity.
scavenger function-clear blood of debris.
antiviral fxn in that they produce interferon.
3-10%
Monocytosis
Recovery phase of an acute infection.
Some chronic infections!!!!!!!!!!!~particularly tuberculosis, syphilis, EBV.
Chronic autoimmune diseases
Lymphocyte fxn
T and B cells, cannot be diff on cbc. T = adaptive immune response and memory. B = humoral immune response which involves the production of antibodies that will target specific antigens.
Lymphocytosis
Viral infections.
TB and other mycobacterial inf.
Syphilis
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Lymphocytopenia
Immunosuppression due to tx therapies like chemo or dz like AIDS or Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Common reasons for Reactive Lymphs:
“on MTV”
Mononucleosis
Tuberculosis
Viral Hepatitis
Target cells are found in
thalassemias and post splenectomy
Sickle cells are found in
sickle cell crisis
Spherocytes are found in
autoimmune hemolytic anemia
Schistocytes:
some hemolytic anemias with INTRAvascular destruction of RBCs(not autoimmune)
Howell-Jolly Bodies inside RBCs are found in
“grains inside RBCs”
post splenectomy
“holly jolly got her spleen stolen!”
Basophilic Stippling in RBCs are only seen in:
smear if stained!
blue spots
-=-lead poisoning
Normal Hemoglobin
Women: 12-16
Men: 14-18
MCHC is:
Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration
REFLECTS THE COLOR of the RBC normal is 32-36.
Low: hypochromic-pale RBCs like IDA
Normal: normochromic
High: hyperchromic is rare
MCH is:
reflects the avg WEIGHT of hemoglobin per RBC, rarely used
Normal RDW is
<14.5%
Thrombocytosis
Splenectomy.
Myeloproliferative dz and other CA.
Hemolytic Anemia
PV
Thrombocytopenia
Acute leukemias Aplastic anemia ITP TTP DIC
Normal Reticulocyte count is
0.5% - 1.5%
