cavity preparation Flashcards
what is a class I cavity?
occlusal surfaces of molars and premolars, buccal pits of molars
what is a class II cavity?
approximal surfaces of molars and premolars
what is a class III cavity?
aproximal surfaces of incisors and canines
what is a class IV cavity?
incisal edges of incisors and canines
what is a class V cavity?
cervical margins
what are the disadvantages of blacks cavity classification?
doesn’t consider root caries or secondary caries
was introduced before composite so more tooth tissue removed than necessary
what are the 6 steps of cavity preparation?
- outline form
- resistance form
- retention form
- treatment of residual caries
- correction of enamel margins
- cavity debridement
what is outline form?
gaining access to caries
what is resistance form
ability to withstand occlusal forces, 2mm depth and floor at 90 degree angle
what is retention form?
retaining material in the cavity with grooves, slots, undercuts and occlusal locks
how should you manage soft vs hard dentine?
soft dentine is infected and should be removed, firm but stained dentine can be left.
what is a line angle?
where 2 lines meet
what is a cavosurface angle?
where the cavity wall meets the tooth surface 90-100 degrees
what is a point angle
where 3 lines meets
