Cavities and Membranes Flashcards
Name the four types of membranes.
Cutaneous, Mucous, Serous, Synovial
Define: membranes
Tissues which cover and protect other tissues
Define: Cutaneous membranes
Membranes of the skin.
Function of mucous membranes
line passages
Function of serous membranes.
line cavities (think blisters)
Function of the synovial membranes.
line joints
Define: body cavity
A space
Define: viscera
Organs within the cavities of the body, specifically the abdominal cavity.
Membrane that lines cavities and viscera.
Serous
Dorsal cavaties to know for this chapter:
Cranial and Vertebral
Ventral cavities to know for this chapter:
Thoracic and Abdominopelvic
Define: abdominopelvic cavity
A cavity composed of two cavities: the abdominal and pelvic.
Details of the abdominal cavity:
- superior portion
- contains most of the digestive tract
Details of the pelvic cavity:
- inferior cavity
- distal large intestine, urinary bladder, urethra, and reproductive organs
Describe the thoracic cavity:
- consists of 4 cavities
a. mediastinum (=in the middle)
b. 2 pleural cavity (pleur= rib, side)
c. pericardial (peri=wall cardi=heart)
