causes of social inequality Flashcards
1
Q
unemployment
A
- those without job/not having secure income, despite rates being lowest since 2005 at 4.5, its still a pressing issue
- forces those to rely on benefits, recent benefit cut in place to encourage work, however discriminate against single parents who cannot manage to work
- more than 65% of people in poverty are unemployed
- shows a huge factor has a knock on effect to health
2
Q
cycle of poverty
A
-children who grow up in low income families are more likely to suffer from MH issues and struggle at school, hard to break out of the cycle with no education
- 1 in 8 children who come from a low income background become high income earners
- shows the cycle is extremely hard to break out of and will most likely be generations deep
-further effects them at retirement age with lower entitlement, state pensions just £100 a week, inadequate
3
Q
low pay
A
- 2015 bottom 10% of earners earned -£300 a week, the top 10% earned +£1000 per week
- shows major divide in our society and inequality
- low pay = a deterrent to find work, some cases even show that benefits are higher
- more than 50% of people in poverty live in a family where someone works
- shows low aid jobs not lifting people from poverty and low pay is significant as to why people are stuck in poverty
- 1mil people in the UK are on min wage
- it is insufficient, the real living wage, an unofficial choice for employers is more helpful, 3800 employers chose it as a more realistic wage
- shows uk still have a long way to go before we implement the RLW as compulsory
