Catholic Social Teaching Flashcards
Human dignity
The person is made in the image, and is the clearest reflection, of God among us. ALL human life is sacred and the dignity of the person is the foundation of a moral (good and right) vision of society.
Preferential option for the poor and vulnerable
Society has a moral obligation (duty) to examine personal decisions, polices of private and public institutions, and economic relationships in terms of their effects on the poor and vulnerable. We are called to love our neighbour as ourselves.
Promotion of peace
Peace is a positive, action-oriented concept. It involves mutual respect and confidence between peoples and nations
Participation and subsidiarity
All people have a right to participate in the economic, political, and cultural life of society. ALL people and families must be assured a minimum level of participation in society.
Community and the common good
The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Note: The social conditions that allow us to reach our fulfillment more fully and easily is made up of three essential elements: i) respect for the person; li) the social well-being and development of the group itself; and iii) peace (the stability and security of a just order).
Rights and responsibilities
Human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met.
Solidarity
We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, wherever they live.
Stewardship of creation
We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. We are entrusted with the responsibility of caring for the goods of the earth and preserving them for future generations.
Dignity of work and rights of workers
All workers have a right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, and to safe working conditions. Work should be life-giving, and not just an instrument for profit.
Role of government
Government has a positive moral function as an instrument to promote human dignity, protect human rights, and build the common good. Its purpose is to assist citizens in fulfilling their responsibility to others in society.
