Symbolic Stories = stories which have a hidden meaning. Often told to get across points and for people to understand fully.
Catholics believe Genesis is symbolic story and can be understood alongside reason and science (“to discover the truth we must consider the time and culture” - Catechism of Catholic Church) Key Message = God is responsible for creation of world
WHY
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1)
“You created this out of nothing” (St Augustine)
“I will make a helper for him (Genesis 2)
HOW
Big idea is that God created everything ex nihilo, out of love, and that humans were created to experience love of God, creation and other humans
This would influence Christians by making them care more for the world and each other as it’s God’s gift for us
