HM 1957? background

A

Hm was a man who was ran over by a bicycle and and his hippocampus removed in an attempt to cure his epilepsy

Hm could not create new LTMs but he could access old LTMs and he could create new STMs
This proved that LTM and STM were separate stores of memory

HM and miss Milner 1962-72

A

Milner asked hm to complete an IQ test, a maze drawing activity and a mirror trace a star activity

Hm had above average IQ

after 252 attempts there was no improvment on the maze task (after 30 sec forgot the correct way out)

He showed improvement on the star task
This improvement on the mirror star task shows that proceedual memory in HM was undamaged whereas new episodic memories such as the correct way out of the Maze were very damaged

This result supports Tulving’s LTM Theory as it proves the distinct separation between episodic + semantic memories and procedural memories

Clive Wearing 85

A

Clive wearing after brain damage he retains some memory abilities but lost others

He remembered how to play the piano (procedural)

he couldn’t remember the names of his children (eposodic)

and not the memory of his wedding (also eposodic)

he does have semantic memorys tho as he remembers his wife and the fact he has children

Bus supporting Tulving’s LTM Theory as it shows that LTM consists of different substores
