Q

Case study?

A

using the details of a case of an indivisual or group of indivisuals or an event

picked due to some unusual trait, life experience or wider event within society

using past records (including medical), interviews (qualitive), questionaires (quantitive) and observations

mainly used if the thing we are studying would be unethical to create/conduct in a lab experement e.g. brain damage

Q

Strength of case studys

ethics

A

Ethical as can study unethical things such as brain damage without having to artificialy create it in a lab, reducing physicial halm to the ppt therefore making it more ethical than a traditional lab study.

Q

Weakness of Case study

internal Validity

A

Due to case studys usualy being picked to be studyes due to having brain damage, which helps in theory determin what a part of the brain that is damaged does by comparing the behaviour of the brain damaged ppt and a non damaged one

however we cannot be 100% sure that the brain damage is the cause of the difference in behaviour as other damage near that area of the brain may have caused the behaviour change
this means that we cannot accuratly establish cause and effect and therefore case studys have low internal validity

Q

Strength of case study

longituduinal valididt

A

Case studys oftern take place over a long perioid of time (longituduinal) this means that the data recorded overtime can reveal patterns in development and change in behaviour. As data is collected all the time, over time, it gives case studys longituduinal validity

Q

Weakness of Case study

generalisability

A

A weakness of case studys is that due to being used for their indivisual difference and uniqueness (mainly brain damage) ppt’s results cannot be generalised to the whole population as their (usualy brain structure/damage/experiences) are completly unique and cannot be generalised to anybody else
giving case studys
low generalisability
