  • Robert Mugabe became the first president in 1987.
  • his ‘land redistribution’ campaign in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippling the economy and causing food shortages
  • 2002 election was rigged and Mugabe’s party used fraud and imitation to win the 2005 election
  • in 2005, Operation Restore Order resulted in the destruction of 700,000 homes
  • there was rioting and protest after another election in 2008, when the opposition leader won the most votes but did not win
  • a power share was agreed in february 2009, but mugabe is still in charge
