- Inner city decline as a result of cheap labour from abroad so that many industries such as iron, steel and textiles closed down.
- Gorbals in the 1950s had 7 people living per square metre in high rise buildings. Huge unemployment lead to the vicious cycle of poverty, social deprivation and the broken window theory

Solutions to inner city decline?
A
- inspiration from redevelopment of european cities like barcelona, the area was redesigned with new, modern architecture.
- replaced with houses for rent and sale, mixed income housing (more community)
- more open space and facilities like street art, seating areas and a new library
- funded by private developers so council invest in different things
