Case Studies, Content Analysis and Thematic Analysis Flashcards
What is a case study?
An indepth analysis of an individual or small group that has experienced something rare or unusual.
Which type of data do case studies typically use?
Qualitative data.
What do we call case studies that have taken place over a long period of time?
Longitudinal
Why is it good that case studies are often detailed?
Provide us with rich data into unusual events/behaviours.
What are case studies able to generate for future research?
Hypothesis
What are the generalisation issues with case studies?
Case studies are very unique to small groups of people or individuals. Because they are so specific, they may not apply successfully to wider populations.
Why might case studies be low in temporal validity?
They might rely on the memories of PPTs which could be inaccurate.
What is a content analysis?
An observational research method where people are studied indirectly by examining behaviour in books, magazines, TV, video clips etc
What are thematic analysis’?
A qualitative approach to analysis that involves identifying implicit or explicit ideas within data. Themes emerge once data has been coded.
What are coding categories?
Categories of things you might expect to see in the source you are analysing
What type of data does a content analysis produce?
Quantitative
What type of data does a thematic analysis produce?
Qualitative
How might researchers test the validity of their thematic analysis?
By collecting a new set of data and comparing.
Why are content analysis important in psychological research?
They help us to circumnavigate ethical issues
Why are there no issues with privacy when conducting a content analysis?
Sources are usually already publicly available
