CM attributes and Characteristics
- Personal characteristics of CM may be significant
- Throughout CM process, you will need to demonstrate:
> Self awareness and insight
> Capacity to communicate acceptance and genuineness
> Respect of others
> Empathy and attunement
> Cultural sensitivity
Intake
Often occurs during initial interview with client…
- Information gathered about client (age, gender, family and other supports, desire to get help, presenting problems)
- Determine clients eligibility to appropriate services from the information gathered
- Provide client with info about services at this time
> Starting point of providing support
> The process by which clients come into the service (gate keeping = attracting and screening)
Preparing Initial Interview
Consider:
- Cultural requirements
- Client require an advocate?
- Client require other assistance?
- Physical environment make client feel comfortable?
Physical setting initial interview
- Ensure confidentiality
- Avoid physical barriers
- Avoid interruptions
- Where would you hold the interview?
“Bio”-Psycho-Social focus
Biological - biological components of a person’s current situation. (generic predisposition of health or mental health/illness)
Bio-Psycho-“Social” focus
Social - Focus on clients social arrangements and relational context, and how their current issues accentuate or alleviated by their social context
Aspects of clients bio-psycho-social status is impacted by social structure including
- age
- gender
- class
- ethnicity
- disability
- sexuality
- health
Bio-“Psycho”-Social focus
Psychological - How a person makes sense of their situation and capacity to cope. (elderly selling their home can)
- see it as opportunity to mingle with other elderly in a nursing home.
- See it as failure to hold onto their independence.
In CM, what is assessment
Process where information is gathered, analysed and synthesised.
What is needs
- CM is needs based
- Can be conceptualised as a circumstance in clients life that requires action, to assist them attain an adequate lifestyle
- Meet a satisfactory level of existence in daily living environment
- Influenced by several factors (psychological make up, social situation, level of support)
Assessment of need
- Identify met and unmet needs
- Identify resources
- Opportunity to determine most effective ways to address needs
- Monitor overall progress
Moxley’s Assessment Frame work (4 categories of assessing client need)
- Nature of client needs
- Client capacity to address need
- Contribution of informal supports
- Contribution of HS agencies (formal support)
