Explain the biopsychosocial approach in mental health

•1. What might the effects be of index patient’s (IP) problem on other family (Consider parents, children, and siblings)?
Depression family feels guilty for possibly causing it, schizophrenia episodes causing PTSD on family members
•What specifically might be the problems for the main carer(s)?
Struggling and involvement of social services might be required, if they have underlying diagnosis’ themselves
•3. How is the disorder interfering with family relationships?
E.g. drunk behaviour affecting the family dynamics and then how it will affect the children’s future (possibly leading to psychiatry issues)
•4. Are there any genetic implications for family members and if so what would you say to a family member’s inquiry?
Using facts but mainly using the biopsychosocial approach to manage the question
•5. What risks might arise in these families? How would these be managed?
Death, abuse, sexual abuse, child’s problems later affecting other members mental health
•6. What are the family strengths? How could these be harnessed?
Partners and family members supporting each other and gaining better family communication. Family living all together

How to ask questions about absent family members?
Keep questions open and sensitive and make sure don’t touch on any triggers
